The 2011 Topsfield Fair will be held in Topsfield, MA from September 30 – October 10, 2011. On June 12, 1818, the Essex Agricultural Society was granted a charter to establish the Fair. The exhibits were held in a variety of sites in Essex County “to promote and improve the agricultural interests of farmers and others in Essex County.” Since 1910, the Fair has been held at its current location ” — to encourage, promote and preserve Essex County agricultural activities and to educate the general public regarding their importance — “
The 2011 Topsfield Fair, like previous fairs, is a bevy of events and demonstrations ranging from the Draft Horse Show to the Fruits and Vegetables Display; ribbons, medals and prize money can be won in many of the events. The Farm Yard event is a must-see for people of all ages. Here the whole family can watch the shearing of sheep, tiny piglets, the Essex County K-9 Unit and a host of other animals.
There a variety of demonstrations underway throughout the week. These include woodworking techniques put on by the Furniture Institute of New England, an educational program of Bengal Tigers and a working blacksmith shop. A host of other programs are also featured providing educational opportunities for the whole family.
The “Giant Pumpkin Contest”, which was started in 1984, is now known world-wide. Pumpkins entered in this contest must weigh a minimum of 300 pounds! The record for the largest pumpkin since the contest was instituted was set in 2007 with a weight of 1,689 pounds. In 2010, the largest pumpkin was just short of the 2007 record with a weight of 1,675 pounds.
For visitors who live out-of-state, hotels and motels are available in cities and towns surrounding Topsfield. General admission ticket prices along with discounted ticket prices are available online. Senior Citizen Day for men and women 60 years of age and older will be on October 3, 2011. Military Day is on October 4, 2011; active military personnel and immediate family members will be admitted free of charge when proper military identification is presented.
