Andre The Giant was reported to be seven feet, four inches tall. In the wrestling world, he was referred to the “Eight Wonder of The World.” In truth, Andre was closer to six feet, ten inches tall. Regardless of his height, Andre Roussimoff was a true giant. He was born with acromegaly, also referred to as gigantism.
Andre The Giant lived a fascinating life. A life rich with tales of super human strength and courage. Here are a few tall tales about Andre The Giant, as told by the people who loved him.
In an article written by Frank Dusek, Frank explained just how strong Andre The Giant could be. The two warriors were at a wrestling show, and before the event began, struck up a game of cribbage. No matter how hard Andre tried, he just could not win. Frank saw the frustration in Andre’s eye, and tried to lose the last hand. But, Frank was on a hot streak, and ‘double-skunked’ the giant in a game of cribbage. Andre slammed his fist onto the bench, and then grabbed a deck of cards. In anger, he ripped the entire deck in half like a hot knife through butter. Andre walked away. Frank Dusek felt lucky he survived.
Andre had a perverse sense of humor. Many wrestlers have claimed that if Andre The Giant didn’t like you, and you were wrestling him that night, he was going to make your life miserable. One of Andre’s time honored traditions was to leave himself, well, unhygienic. Andre would put his opponent in the corner and then sit on his opponents face. The opponent would then be submerged in Andre The Giant sweat and unwashed rear end. Andre would often laugh. Oddly enough, Andre would also play this cruel joke on his friends, and get a big kick out of their reactions.
Hulk Hogan, easily the most popular wrestler of all time, told TMZ in July that Andre The Giant “checked my oil.” In wrestling, checking someone’s oil means to stick your thumb up your opponents butt to gain an advantage. It is illegal in amateur wrestling. Unfortunately, in pro wrestling, it is not. Hogan claims that Andre stuck his huge thumb up his butt at Wrestlemania three at the Pontiac Silverdome in front of 93,000 fans.
One of the most infamous stories involving Andre The Giant took place outside a bar in New York City. The legend goes that two drunk men were egging Andre on at a bar. Andre, enraged, went after the men. The smaller faster men were able to make it outside and into a cab. But, you know how bad traffic in New York City is. Andre was able to walk up to the cab, which was stopped in the street. Andre grabbed the cab and flipped it onto its side. Andre then walked back to his hotel.
In a lengthy article written by Richard English of Drunkard.com, he explained some of Andre The Giant’s feats in the alcohol arena. Apparently, Andre The Giant was capable of drinking 7000 calories of beer a night. Additionally, one night, Andre was able to polish off 119 beers. It would have been a Guinness World Record had it been pre planned. But Andre just liked to drink. A lot.
All the people that knew Andre The Giant say the same thing. There will never be anybody like the great Andre The Giant. And they couldn’t be more right.
