David G. Welsh introduces the reading world to his magical The Key of Souls universe with Legend Unborn. As the first book in Welsh’s four book The Key of Souls series, Legend Unborn sets the story’s foundation. The trouble begins when the evil wizard Dargalore awakes from a four century long exile. With help from his loyal servant Tarnis Dargalore puts forth a plan to regain his wizard staff so he can return to power. The plan involves Dargalore using black magic to build a supernatural army which brings dark times to all society. Hope exists though within a legend passed down over the years. Yet the odds don’t look too good as the legend relies on some very unlikely characters.
Several characters in the legend illustrate paradox irony. Flyfar, a talking eagle, holds much anxiety towards flying. Kaitlyn the daughter of famed knife thrower Sharptone showcases wild aim when she sends a knife through the air. Taff, a young wizard possessing powerful abilities, constantly watches his magic unravel right in front of him causing chaos. To say Silvanus, a god accidently birthed during five friends’ drunken celebration, doesn’t fit the traditional god concept serves as a gross understatement. Silvanus walks with crutches, speaks with a stutter, and maintains a blissful ignorance majority of the time.
When Legend Unborn begins the different characters remain separate from each other. Welsh alternates chapters to write about each character. This format enhances the anticipation Legend Unborn gives readers because as the story progresses you become intrigued to find out what happens next. However, to discover what occurs you need to get through the chapters on the other characters. In the process you get hooked on the events taking place with the others. Ultimately this leads to an inability to stop reading the magical tale. As you finish Legend Unborn your curiosity peaks, yearning to find out what will happen next.
