COMMENTARY | Americans are angry, and, according to a poll conducted by California-based E-Poll’s E-Score Celebrity research, the most hated person in the United States is surprisingly not a political figure.
The honor for the Most Hated Person goes to Casey Anthony, reports International Business Times. The 25-year-old has been hiding out, her whereabouts unknown, after she was acquitted of the murder of her 2-year-old daughter, Caylee. Caylee would have turned six Tuesday. Hundreds of people, including Caylee’s grandparents, gathered for a memorial on her birthday this week, but her mother was nowhere to be seen.
According to the survey, 94 percent of the people who answered say they dislike Anthony, 57 percent consider her “creepy,” and 60 percent called her “cold.”
With Anthony not reporting the disappearance of her daughter for a month, most people feel she is guilty, even though she was acquitted. Even the acquittal of O.J. Simpson in 1995 did not cause this much anger, according to the Huffington Post. On the most hated persons list, Simpson sits at fourth place. Time may have healed some of the hatred in that case, but the fact that a child was dead is likely the real reason.
Sometimes I think it’s easier for us to direct our hatred and anger to those we don’t know in real life, and maybe in some ways it’s therapeutic.
It will be difficult for Anthony to ever return to a normal life; if she does feel any pain or remorse about what happened, it may, almost, be justice served. The words of juror number three will likely remain in the minds of the American public for many years to come.
“I did not say she was innocent, I just said there was not enough evidence. If you cannot prove what the crime was, you cannot determine what the punishment should be.” — Jennifer Ford, juror number 3, via Hot Air.
Those words, and the thought of Anthony getting away with a heinous crime, make me nauseous, and I know I’m not the only one who feels that way.
Another member of the Most Hated list is Nadya Suleman, who gave birth to octuplets after already giving birth to six children. Sarah Palin’s daughter Bristol was also on the list. Bristol is likely one of the most disliked due to the fact that she used her teen pregnancy to make hundreds of thousands of dollars by preaching about abstinence while at the same time admitting that telling young people to be abstinent is “not realistic at all,” according to CNN.
Americans don’t like hypocrisy, and we don’t like bad things happening to children. It’s not easy being in the public eye, but sometimes I think it is due justice.
