New details are being released on the cause of death for 30 year old Harsh Kumar who fell 20 floors to his death in a trash chute at the Park Charles Apartments in August of 2010. An autopsy report listed that he died of massive injuries that included a fractured skull, a broken neck, shattered ribs, and a broken nose. He had numerous cuts on his head, face, arms, chest, and legs. His fingernails were dirty and bloody and his black tank top had large tears and blood stains. He was 5 feet 7 inches tall and weighed 156 pounds. An information technology worker at John Hopkins University , Harsh had lived at the building for several years and had alcohol and the powerful sleeping sedative Zolpidem in his system. Pathologists didn’t list how much alcohol or how much of the drug was in his system but the report eventually concluded that the facts didn’t suggest any particular signs of suicide or homicide and his cause of death was ruled undetermined .
Case closed, right? Now 23 year old Emily Hauze, an honor student who graduated cum laude from Loyola University Maryland has seemingly met the same fate after falling through a trash chute in the same apartment building on Sunday and investigators are being unusually quiet and tight lipped about not only a cause of death for Emily but also any other information as to why she was in the building in the first place or even what floor she was on when she entered the chute. Was she a resident? Was she visiting someone else in the building?
“There is no link either forensically or through the victims and we are awaiting the medical examiner’s ruling to lead us down an investigative path.” detective Kevin Brown told reporters.
Several questions remain unanswered as to the possible theory of Harsh accidentally falling through a 14 inch by 16 inch trash chute. Even if he were heavily intoxicated or out of it from Zolpidem, residents are 100% certain that a person can’t just fall through the trash chute without assistance and many even wonder if a serial killer is residing among them. Who would hold open the chute’s door while a person is falling through? Also, how would a drunk, sleepy person even have the coordination it would take to not only hold open the heavily spring, coiled door of the chute but successfully fall in as well? Was an investigation done as to whether Harsh had a prescription for the drug Zolpidem and if he didn’t, how did it end up in his system? Why was his fingernails bloody and dirty? Is that also an injury that would be consistent with a fall through a trash chute or something else?
Pending Emily’s autopsy report and official cause of death it’s true one can only continue to speculate as to what really happened and how two bodies with apparently no link or connection to each other ended up in the trash chute of the same apartment building. Whether a bizarre coincidence, freak accident, or something more sinister, the family and friends of both Emily and Harsh deserve a thorough, sensible, investigation as to what happened and to not have their intelligence insulted with impossible, specalatory, unlikely scenarios.
