Fashion resolutions are a great way to set yourself up for a fun and fresh start to the year ahead. Rather than resolutions that end up breeding negative feelings towards yourself (such as that impossible no-more-snacking-after-7:00 pm rule), focus on ways to encourage and inspire yourself.
- Rock the Red Pants
Living almost as far removed from a city as possible has a tendency to cause me to dress a bit more subtly than I would like to. However, I am quite frankly tired of my red jeans being permanently creased in a square shape from living their lives in my closet. (Yes, I have two pairs. One skinny and one flared.) I’m going to rock them, and embrace the stares. What you wear outwardly is a great way to express who you are on the inside, and if my soul was a pair of jeans, I’d like to think it would be a nice, bright red pair.
- Put On some Heels
I love heels. I also happen to tower over most people without them. I’ve noticed I’ve been doing everything in my power to wear the flattest shoes imaginable lately. This is about to change. I have decided to embrace and celebrate what my father gave me, and unashamedly add those four inches to my already five-foot-nine frame if the mood strikes me.
- Ditch the Baggage
Cleaning out your closet is a great way to metaphorically cleanse your life of unwanted baggage. My closet is stuffed, and half of that “stuffing” is made up of things that I haven’t touched in probably two years or more. It’s time to gut the closet and only allow things back in that are worthy. Items that bring back painful sentimental memories, unflattering shirts that droop in all the wrong places and jeans that you can almost see the sun through have to go. Out with the old, and in with the new!
When I think to myself, “Wow, she looks great in that outfit,” I’m starting to realize that nine times out of ten, the person has accessorized their look in some way. Adding jewelry, sunglasses, a scarf or even just a belt can take an outfit to the next level. This is something that I too often completely skip over. I throw on my clothing and out the door I go. Taking the time to sprinkle in some jewelry or wrap a belt around the next baggy sweater I wear just might draw some second glances!
- Just say Thank You!
This is perhaps the most important fashion New Year’s resolution that anyone can embrace: just say thank you. Too often individuals respond to compliments with negativity directed towards themselves. I don’t want to be uncomfortable with praise. I deserve it and so do you. The next time someone compliments me on my outfit, I’m simply going to smile and say a genuine, simple “thank you.” Try it the next time someone compliments you, and then keep it going and return a compliment back to them!
