“Most men lead lives of quiet desperation.” Henry David Thoreau
We live in age where we are continually talking about being happy and finding fulfillment. We seem to forever be seeking something we may already have or can never attain if we keep seeking beyond where we are. I often am asked to counsel people about finding fulfillment in their marriage, work, relationships, activities, families and more. I ask them if the fulfillment is in whatever area they are seeking or is the fulfillment within them. They often look at me with a confused look and that is when I know where we are starting.
The joy of fulfillment can only be known when I know that my fulfillment is my responsibility and can only occur when I am ready to be fulfilled. I give myself the gift of exploration to find where I am feeling unfulfilled; forgive myself for anything I think I may have contributed to my lack of fulfillment and start making my list of fulfilling actions and goals.
My list does not need to be a long list. The fact that I can even make a list is fulfilling. What I put on it is secondary to the act of knowing that I deserve to be fulfilled. My fulfillment is a journey, not a destination. I am not the fifth stop on the bus route. My journey is eternal and will forever have ups and downs. I need to remember to do the best I can with staying in touch with me and my fulfillment and not relying on others to fulfill me.
My prayer for you today is that you look inside and know how fulfilled you already are and find new ways to add joy to your fulfillment.
