It is not always necessary that you give in cash or kind. Sometimes giving your time and skills to a cause is much more satisfying. There are many such opportunities in Atlanta to be involved with. And it does not take much effort either. Here are just a few:
- Literacy volunteers of Atlanta – I volunteered with this organization a few years ago. They focus on adult literacy and improving the level of literacy among adults in the metro area. Like many, I was under the impression that all adults could read but that is not the case. There are many who are left vulnerable when they cannot read signs for a bus or prescriptions for medication. This organization helps cover that gap. They also host the famous Spellabration and Edible Book Festival fundraisers annually. They currently have voluntary opportunities for tutors, teachers and teaching assistants. Most teaching is done on a one-on-one basis. You can learn more here http://www.lvama.org/html/volunteer.php
- Chriskids – Another organization that I volunteered with, Chriskids takes upon itself the responsibility of providing for the youth in the community and helping provide them home and shelter and a strong foundation for their future. Their annual Christalball is their largest fundraiser. They will be celebrating their 30th anniversary and the opening of their new location August 30th – an apt time to be a part of the organization and show your support for their work. You can R.S.V.P. to 404-564-3458 or Beth.Keller@chriskids.org. They are always looking for volunteers. You can learn more here http://www.chriskids.org/
- Giving 101 – This is the organization that coordinates Expedition Give – the amazing race-type challenge with a charity twist. During the race, participants are involved in several charity tasks and also learn about different charities working in the metro area. They need volunteers for race days preparations which are just round the corner. Areas of work include set-up and check-in, check-points during the race, finish line and scoring, and clean-up after. Being a part of these organizations and helping them in their genuine efforts is a wonderful feeling. All they need sometimes is help with a few simple tasks but do not have the resources to do so and your help is always greatly appreciated. You also get to meet other volunteers and make some great contacts! So go forth and volunteer away!
