Jennifer Aniston has long since moved on from her painful split from Brad Pitt, her ex-husband who overdid the method acting a bit in “Mr. & Mrs. Smith,” romantically bonding with his movie wife, Angelina Jolie. Still many of the “Friends” star’s fans continue to take sides in the old Camp Jen vs. Camp Angie rivalry.
This month, members of both teams can put their money where their mouth is at their favorite magazine stands. Two of America’s most popular magazines are featuring the markedly different women on their October covers. A smiley Jennifer Aniston shares the spotlight with Demi Moore and Alicia Keys on the girly Glamour cover while Angelina Jolie’s voluptous face dominates the cover of the urbane Vanity Fair
Here’s a comparison of the two women’s appearances on their October magazine covers:
How They’re Dressed
Jennifer Aniston: Jen is shot from the waist up wearing a white Splendid tank top, Hudson jeans and Fred Leighton jewelry. The look is fresh, clean and friendly.
Angelina Jolie: Umm, we’re not sure if Angie is dressed or not. The photo is a head shot that exposes bare shoulders, with no hint of clothes. She looks naked but not vulnerable.
The winner: It’s the old Mary Ann vs. Ginger game from TV’s “Gilligan’s Island.” Depends on whether you dig the girl next door or are smitten by the sexy starlet.
Whom They’re With
Jennifer Aniston: Jen is posed with fellow A-listers Demi Moore and Alicia Keys, who are clasping each other’s hands as a sign of friendship. Known for having a flock of females wherever she goes, it seems natural for the “Horrible Bosses” star to share her cover opp with other famous femmes.
Angelina Jolie: Lone wolf Angie appears solo.
The winner: Angie snags the spotlight but Jen seems happier.
Why They’re There
Jennifer Aniston: Jen is promoting an upcoming Lifetime movie called “Five,” a melange of five vignettes directed by Aniston and her fellow cover girls, Keys and Moore, as well as “Monster” director Patty Jenkins and Penelope Spheeris, who directed the 1979 punk-rock documentary “The Decline of Western Civilization.” The project revolves around women’s reactions to getting breast cancer — including the disease’s effects on their relationships and shifting self-image — injecting humor and strength into the horror that ensues after receiving the dread diagnosis.
Angelina Jolie: Angie is hawking her new film “In the Land of Blood and Honey,” which she both wrote and directed. The movie, slated for a December 2011 theatrical release, studies the effects of the Bosnian war on a couple’s relationship and features local actors instead of big name stars.
The winner: Both breast cancer and war are serious movie-worthy topics, and both films focus on the human drama inherent in each.
What They Said
Jennifer Aniston: “We wanted to balance the drama with humor and irreverence because that’s what’s helped our friends who’ve faced this (breast cancer) get through their treatment. We wanted stories that were informative without being heavy-handed. Oh, and they needed to be brilliantly written. Other than that, our goals were small. [Laughs.]” (from October 2011 Glamour interview)
Angelina Jolie: “I had the flu . . . . I had to be quarantined from the children for two days. I was in the attic of a house in France. I was isolated, pacing. I don’t watch TV and I wasn’t reading anything. So I started writing. I went from the beginning to the end. I didn’t know any other way.” (from October 2011 Vanity Fair interview)
Who won: It feels like Jen had fun with her project, while Angie endured a tortuous ordeal.
Of course, if you’re a member of Camp Angie, the “Salt” actress wins in all the above categories — and vice versa. Ultimately, the actresses-turned-directors are both winners for landing on the covers of two mega-magazines and touting projects that reflect loftier issues than the old Archie comic book-style rivalry of which woman is more worthy of winning Brad Pitt’s heart.
