The results are in for the best cities for senior citizens. While many would expect the milder climate states or sunshine drenched locations to top the list, the list compiled by Sperling’s Best Places had a few surprises. Pittsburgh ranked No. 3 on the list. In fact, the top five cities were in areas not noted for mild winter weather.
Topping the list was Minneapolis-St. Paul. The rest of the top included: Boston, Pittsburgh, Cleveland and Denver. The list was sponsored by Bankers Life and Casualty Company and took into consideration a number of factors with weighted differently including: healthcare, economy, environment, housing, transportation, and crime. In the end the Twin Cities area of Minnesota reigned at the top.
The No. 3 spot is another highlight for the Steel City. Earlier this year Pittsburgh was recognized as the most livable city in America. Pennsylvania as a whole has not exactly shared in the success that the city has achieved. The Keystone State was recognized as having the worst bridges in America and also for having the most endangered river in America, the Susquehanna.
But seniors seem to be pretty well situated in Western Pennsylvania. The amount of quality health care facilities, moderate cost of living, and reasonably priced housing keeps Pittsburgh near the top of best places for an older population. According to the 2010 Census, the Pittsburgh area had more than 406,000 residents aged 60 and older. So while not the largest concentration of seniors in America, they represent a large amount of people.
For Pittsburgh the accolade is just the latest that stretches out over the past few years. The city is making strides in many areas of life services, and being recognized in the top five of any national ranking is an accomplishment of which any city can be proud.
From a regional point of view, the northern tier placed three cities in the top five: Boston, Pittsburgh and Cleveland. It would seem older residents should not fear the moderate climates but embrace them. Of course, all the cities receive a certain amount of nice weather throughout the year. However, when it comes to ranking cities on an overall list, weather is just one piece of the puzzle. Still, Pittsburgh is having a pretty good year.
