Sometimes my sons and I like to jump in to our car or truck and go for a ride. Most people when they travel from Idaho Falls, Idaho to Wyoming will take the Ririe Highway up past the Palisades Reservoir. The last time we jumped into the car to take a ride I wanted to go over the mountains and enjoy some cheese curds from the Cheese Factory in Star Valley but I didn’t want to drive the heavy traffic of Labor Day weekend. Nor did I want to use more gas than necessary. So we drove East up thru Bone on what is known as the Bone road. The pavement ends there in Bone. Traveling now on a dirt road past range cattle and sage, town life is forgotten. If I had the health and strength riding a bike thru this area would be a great adventure.
After a few turns in the road and past the road to the Wolverine we traveled on east past a road that could take us to Soda Springs, Idaho. However, after heading east 11 miles the Bone Road turns into Long Valley Road, then traveling on we past the McKay road below Caribou mountain and the road turns south cutting across the north end of Gray’s lake. I really enjoyed the road as it curved around the foot hills on the east side of the marsh lake where after 13 miles Long Valley Road turns into Gray’s Lake Road and we travel thru the small Gray’s Lake community where the road becomes paved again. Once about four miles south of Gray’s lake, after having traveled about 22 miles, close to the community of Wayan, the road connects to highway 34 and then it is 21 miles east thru the mountains. I like mountain passes that are low and easy. The road breaks out of the mountains in the community of Freedom, Idaho/Wyoming. That’s right, the community of Freedom is in both States.
I like Freedom, Wyoming. It is a small community which appears to be a perfect image of the American dream. If naming locations with positive names will lead to positive and productive citizens then Freedom and Star Valley are perfect names for positive vibes.
The cheese curds and the fudge at the Star Valley Cheese Factory were tasty but the Rueben Sandwich was the best and the scenery was awesome. The cheese factory is just south of Freedom in a small community of Thayne, Wyoming. It is 76 miles from Idaho Falls, Idaho to Freedom, Wyoming thru the hills which is less than the 88 miles by highway 26 past Palisades.
