Once upon a time, there was a Little King. He was very rich. If he wanted gold, he got gold. If wanted diamonds, he got diamonds. And if he wanted rubies, he got rubies. Anything he wanted, he got; except for pearls. The Little King did not own any part of the ocean where pearls were found. The neighboring kingdom did, but their king was greedy.
However, one day the Greedy King was hosting a ball, He invited the Little King to attend. The Little King went, hoping to get at least one pearl from the castle, for the Greedy King had millions upon millions of pearls. Surely, he would not miss one little pearl.
When the Little King arrived at the ball, the Greedy King showed him around the castle, and even took him to see the Royal Treasury. That’s where the Little King saw the perfect pearl to take. It was sitting on a purple cushion, like all the others. Obviously though, he did not take care of this one. All the others were so shiny and sparkly! That pearl was dull and covered in dust.
The Little King wondered why the Greedy King would treat something so beautiful like that. It was so amazing and pretty; a gift from God himself. He treated the other ones so much better, why not that pearl? The Little King decided that during the party, he would sneak in and take it for himself.
It was almost midnight when the Little King escaped from the ball. Everyone was wearing a mask, so no one would even notice he was gone. He was walking down the hallways at a quick pace so no one would see him. BUT! When he walked into the Royal Treasury, the pearl was gone!
Instead, there was a young woman sitting on that same purple cushion that the pearl was on.
“Why are you here, young Lass,” asked the Little King.
“I’ve lived in this room for years,” replied the young woman.
The Little King was getting annoyed, this girl was obviously crazy! He put that aside for a more important question.
“Where is the pearl?”
She grinned at the Little King.
“My name is Pearl, I am the pearl that sat on this very cushion,” she knew the Little King did not understand. “I am put under a curse by a witch, the Greedy King’s mother. Every day, I remain still and silent, like a ‘proper woman should be’. That’s what the Greedy King wanted. However, I come alive every night just to sit alone in the darkness. My father was once king of this land. The Greedy King wanted all the pearls, including me. He took our land when my father died, and put that curse on me.”
The Little King now understood why the Greedy King treated the pearl, or “Pearl” so harshly. He was truly consumed with greed and wanted the princess all to himself, He thought that if he left the pearl dusty and ugly, no one would want it, because no one wants an ugly pearl. The Little King still wanted a pearl, but she did nothing to deserve this. He must save her. He looked at Pearl – she was still amazing, still pretty, and still a gift from God himself.
The rest of the story is unknown. Did the Little King help Pearl escape? Did they fall in love? Did the Greedy King try to stop them? Did the Greedy King succeed? No one knows.
