The constellation of Sagittarius lies in between Scorpio and Capricorn and its dates are between November 22nd and December 21st. The unique layouts of the stars that create the constellation are shaped in order to resemble a half man half horse holding a curved bow pointed in the direction of Scorpio. The constellation also takes up a partial space of the milky way as well as Sagittarius eight main stars combine what modern day astronomers call the ‘teapot.’
In Greek mythology the centaurs were seen as a vile race, half man and half beast. They were rude, barbaric, untrustworthy, violent and deceptive as well as they drank way too much. However, one of the centaurs was different, and his name was Chiron. Chiron was kind, gentle, lovable, and smart. His wisdom was so well known that many flocked to be taught by him such as Hercules and Aesculapius the God of Medicine. The story goes that one day Hercules became thirsty and found a jar of wine that solely belonged only to the centaurs. He opened it releasing the intoxicating aroma throughout the countryside putting all the centaurs into frenzy. As they attacked Hercules for this insult, Chiron observed from a distant tree. One by one Hercules fought, killed, and drove off many of the centaur but not recognizing his friend and teacher Chiron he shot an arrow into the air which landed and killed him. Zeus placed Chiron into the starry night sky in commemoration of Chiron and to help ease his Son’s sadness.
Another account mentions that Sagittarius was placed among the stars to watch over Scorpio in the event that someone may be harmed by the Scorpions deadly sting. Sagittarius sits with his bow and arrow constantly poised in Scorpios direction. However many mixed accounts confuse the exact origination of when Sagittarius may have been placed among the stars. Many believe that the Babylonians invented the 12 zodiac signs that are used today while many others believe that the Sumerians may have had a helping hand.
People born under this sign usually exemplify a teacher’s attitude. Chiron was a patient and wise teacher, the same personality traits that people born under this sign have as well. It is suggested that because this constellation is half man half horse, this means that people under this sign are in a search for that which lies beyond animal instinct, making them wise and sensitive creatures. Famous Sagittarians include; Ludwig van Beethoven, Steven Spielberg, Walt Disney, and Winston Churchill.
