Okay, it’s time to make the week one NFL picks. My advice to the reader is to not bet on football. Only the bookie wins. These picks are solely for fun.
I like to add a little history to each game then make my picks. This week I will give you the score of the first game in history each opponent played against one another.
Let’s see how close Sunday’s scores come to matching them.
Two quick notes. I’m a Steelers fan so I don’t pick their games. And I always lose on the New York Jets. Whatever way I go on a Jets game bet the opposite.
1937: Washington Redskins 13 New York Giants 3
Today: Giants -3
This was the first NFL game played in Washington. Giants return to D.C. as a 3 point favorite.
1996: Pittsburgh Steelers 31 Baltimore Ravens 17
Today: Ravens -1.5
Ravens second game after moving from Cleveland and dropping the name Browns.
Pick: Almost got me. No pick.
1977: Detroit Lions 16 Tampa Bay Buccaneers 7
Today: Buccaneers -1.5
This was the 24th of 26 straight Buccaneers losses. No question the Buccaneers were not the favorite.
1966: Chicago Bears 23 Atlanta Falcons 6
Today: Falcons -2.5
1966 was the Falcons inaugural season in the NFL. It was the Bears 47th.
1960: Kansas City Chiefs (Dallas Texans) 45 Buffalo Bills 28
Today: Chiefs -6
The Chiefs began as the Texans before moving to Kansas City in 1963.
1970: Cleveland Browns 30 Cincinnati Bengals 27
Today: Browns -6.5
This 1970 game is best known as former Browns head coach Paul Brown’s return to Cleveland. This year’s Bengal visit has no such drama.
1995: Tennessee Titans (Houston Oilers) 10 Jacksonville Jaguars 3
Today: Jaguars -2
The first game in Jaguars history was played in Houston as the Titans were the Oilers at that time.
1995: Carolina Panthers 27 Arizona Cardinals 7
Today: Cardinals -7
1995 was the Panthers first season in the NFL and they beat the oldest NFL franchise easily.
1976: San Francisco 49ers 37 Seattle Seahawks 21
Today: 49ers -5.5
This was the Seahawks third NFL game. They were in the NFC then before going to the AFC in 1977. They returned to the NFC in 2002.
2002: Indianapolis Colts 23 Houston Texans 3
Today: Texans -8.5
The Oilers replacement in Houston actually held Colts quarterback Peyton Manning to less than 300 yards passing.
1975: Minnesota Vikings 28 San Diego Chargers 13
Today: Chargers -8.5
This was the 10th straight win for the Vikings to open the 1975 season.
1937: Cleveland (St. Louis) Rams 21 Philadelphia Eagles 3
Today: Eagles -4
Yes the Rams began in Cleveland. Sunday they will play in St. Louis.
1971: Dallas Cowboys 52 New York Jets 10
Today: Jets -5
That score is not a misprint. Dallas rolled en route to their first world’s championship.
1967: Boston (New England) Patriots 41 Miami Dolphins 10
Today: Patriots -6.5
You can bet the Patriots will score 41 if they can.
1960: Denver Broncos 31 Oakland Raiders 14
Today: Broncos -3
The Broncos wore brown and gold uniforms with vertically striped socks.
It’s game time.
