I could probably do a load of research on this subject but it is more fun to speculate the reason.
First of all I will use myself as an example. I love the Chicago Bears Football team. I never have lived in Chicago and have only visited there a few times in my life so far. Why do I love the Bears?
For me it goes back to when I was younger and my parents gave me this huge stuffed bear with the Chicago Bear symbol on the front of it. At the time this bear was bigger than myself, bigger than life.
That bear sat in my room for years until I gave it to one of my younger siblings. I never really was a big sports nut growing up. I lived mostly on the West coast near San Diego California. I did love to surf, rollerblade, hang gliding and swimming in the ocean but never really paid any attention to sports all that much. I played football, baseball, and learned marital arts as well growing up and even participated in track and field. I loved the pro wrestling most of all growing up. I can remember wanting to grow up and be a wrestling superstar.
It really was when I started working in Las Vegas Nevada after my graduation the sports started to grab my attention. Even than I could have cared less about anything involving sports but as the years passed I became more and more of a sports nut. It really kicked in living in Reno Nevada. I worked in in Vegas as a legal bookie for nearly 11 years, and in 2004 started a sports broadcasting career in Reno Nevada on ESPN. I was also on another radio station and a few television broadcast.
Sometimes I get bored with the all the sports stuff and just want to take a break. In the end something always seems to draw me back into the sports world. I drive my family nuts as well.
I am just a sports nut I guess.
If you look at like this: When I talk about the Bears I say things like “my Bears, my team.”
I do not own the Bears, and I have no decision making powers over the owners or the players but yet I feel a part of the team. I cheer for them when they are winning. I get angry when they make stupid decisions and get disappointed when they lose a game. I buy merchandise and follow the team online! When people ask me who my favorite team is there is no question about it the Chicago Bears!
People like the feeling of belonging to something. It is the reason why sports in America is the number one industry and there are millions of sports fans of all kinds. Why we choose one team over another could have a lot of different factors involved. There is no one correct answer to the question for each person it is determined by different things involving them.
For me I love being around all the athletes, talking to everyone that is involved on every level. I feel through my experience I have gained vast knowledge into the sports industry and why people love it so much. So in the end no matter if you love sports or hate sports I am sure somehow it impacts your life.
